SMH…last year we told you about the disturbing story of Kalief Browder. Browder was 16 when he was arrested on suspicion of stealing a backpack, and he spent 3 years in jail, 2 of them in solitary confinement,without even a trial [click here if you missed it]. His story inspired calls for reform in New York but sadly, Browder has committed suicide at age 22 this weekend and those closest to him say his ordeal with the prison system is what caused it.. 16-Year-Old H.S. Student Spends 3 Years In Rikers Jail For Stealing Backpack But Never Convicted?!

SMH…now this is just ridiculous! A 16-year-old high school sophomore Kalief Browder, of the Bronx, spent nearly three years locked up at Rikers Jail after he was falsely accused of stealing a backpack.  Amazingly, Browder never pleaded guilty, actually refused to plead guilty and requested a trial, even when pressured, but was never convicted and was only offered plea deals while the trial was repeatedly delayed. Knowing he was innocent, Browder refused to accept any plea deals and was forced to spend over two years in solitary confinement!  Read the rest of his story below…
